Life Purpose, Tarot

“Dear Mita

The last 5 years have taught me a lot because of which I find myself doing a lot of self- analysis and trying to figure out what the future has in store for me. But I still don’t know what my real purpose in life is. Can you tell me?”

If you have not asked yourself this critical question you may find yourself pondering about it someday. And if no one has ever answered your question, the reason is simple. Nobody knows your life purpose, only you do.

Years ago I asked a similar question to an elderly native American healer, and she simply told me to go “ask yourself”. A little disappointed by her terse reply, I listened to her words anyway and began to meditate on this. And I learned a lot more about myself I realised our life purpose is closely intertwined with the energies of Love.

As unique as our finger print, our life purpose is part of us since the day we were born. We didn’t come on this planet just to breathe and float from day to day doing all the mundane and the necessary things. There does exist something deep inside all of us which brings meaning into our lives. And we need to learn it for ourselves, just like the way we learnt to sit, then crawl and get up and walk. We have to rediscover and find our just what it was that brought our souls into this form.

Pay attention to the symbols and signals that having been revealed to us since we were children. Symbols could be as basic as a colour or as a complex as the inexplicable stirring in our heart, knowing we are doing something connected with what we are meant to do. Signals could even include a tune, an activity or a memory that brings us pure bliss. Sit with paper and pen and ask about love and joy.
What do you do love doing?
Who do you love being with?
In which locations have you found maximum happiness?
What is lovely about you?

Answers lead to more questions and questions lead to more answers. Ultimately there is no right formula, what works for me may not work for you. And vice versa. Some purposes are revealed at a very young age to gifted child prodigies eg sportsmen like Sachin Tendulkar, Tiger Woods and some purposes come after enormous amounts of honest self enquiry done in a loving, non judgemental manner repeatedly over years. Courage does play a part, because following our life purpose may clash with the views of our loved ones or we may fear taking a risk, for example the chartered accountant who wanted to paint full time felt afraid to lose his monthly income and take a risk. He did find the courage and today his works of art are displayed around the world. In front of the canvas he’s the happiest soul and if you ever to ask him if he regrets his monthly pay cheque, he may smile and tell you when you do what you love, the Universe showers rewards down on you.

The Emportance of Empowerment

12 Wednesday Dec 2012

“Give me a fish and I eat for a day.
Teach me to fish and I eat for a lifetime”

Working with the Tarot cards is like working in a team. Together the reader and the cards make sense of the situation and find a way forward giving the querent knowledge, confidence and hope. And most importantly empowered and not dependent.

I have had people ask me if they should contact me once a week for forecasts, guidance and advice and my response is always a firm Never. Tarot should be turned to whenever we really, truly need it, and not as a weekly advisor. If we allowed others to make all our decisions, validate our every plan and analyse every soul we interact with, what power are we left with?

Empowerment is about tapping into our internal battery that all of us are equipped with as human beings. It’s the light in your soul that makes us unique from the other person, and it’s the fuel to our existence. Empowerment begins with self belief. Knowing that I have the power to change my life. Knowing that I am fully responsible for my choices. And knowing that ultimately only I can control the direction I wish to go in. One simple example would be negative patterns of thinking. Anyone can tell us “think positive”, some can give us techniques, but it is only us who has to work with our minds to train ourselves from shifting from the darkness to the light in terms of thoughs. Not at all easy, but can be done.

Another way of expressing empowerment is with knowledge. When someone tells us something about ourselves we know to be true, we feel the power. When we survive a crisis or tragedy, we are empowered. When we discover realities of life and the truth behind some people, we grow. When we work to train our minds with meditation and our bodies with physical exercise we are working towards adding power within ourselves.

The act of increasing our self confidence, believing more in our capacities to face the ups and downs of Life and gaining strength in the process is true empowerment. And it’s not a one time zap up of oneself, it’s a continual process, strengthening and restrengthening.

Wikipedia describes the capabilities of empowerment pretty clearly in

  • Having decision-making power of one’s own
  • Having access to information and resources for taking proper decision
  • Having a range of options from which you can make choices (not just yes/no, either/or.)
  • Ability to exercise assertiveness in collective decision making
  • Having positive thinking on the ability to make change
  • Ability to learn skills for improving one’s personal or group power.
  • Ability to change others’ perceptions by democratic means.
  • Involving in the growth process and changes that is never ending and self-initiated
  • Increasing one’s positive self-image and overcoming stigma
  • Increasing ones ability in discreet thinking to sort out right and wrong

In short, empowerment is the process that allows one to gain the knowledge, skill-sets and attitude needed to cope up with the changing world and the circumstances in which one lives.
Guides like the Tarot cards are nothing but signposts leading you to your own inner self. Because that’s where true power lies.

Tarot As A Tool For Guidance

12 Wednesday Dec 2012

Posted by mitabhan in Tarot

When I first began to study the Tarot seriously, the first thing I learnt from books and among the psychic circles was that these cards were simply a tool. Like a pen. Or a spoon. Or a keyboard. No way were they a substitute for our lives and how we lead them. Nor could they or should be allowed to rule our lives in any manner. Dependency on predictions alone by the Tarot would surely guarantee errors and disappointment, because the cards worked best as an understanding of the present moment. I remember the words of Monica one of my mentors, a 60 something psychic healer and reader in Singapore “Tarot reading is not fortune telling” she stated as she shuffled her deck.

What it is truly, and the way it works beautifully is as a tool of self discovery, or as a road map to our lives to help us find clarity and understanding about what was going on then, at that present moment when we turned to the cards. The future is not carved in stone and in the ever changing dynamics of energies, a Tarot reading was simply a snap shot of one moment, and the possibilities that may arise if certain actions are or are not taken. In a spread, a reader ought to stress not on the outcome, but more on the cards that come out in the advice position. Rather than when, it’s the how and the why that Tarot works best with.

In theory that made so much sense, and I incorporated a 5 minute introductory spiel to all my Tarot readings, stating it’s powers and also it’s limitations. But practice proved to be another thing all together. A large majority of the querents who came to see me were only focused on the future. A growing few began to evolve with the readings and I can proudly state I have clients who come for readings asking Why, How, How Can I rather than When. And who walk away applying the wisdom and benefiting from it in leaps and bounds. Marriages have been salvaged because a querent chose to listen to the message of acceptance and tolerance. And careers have soared as querents applied the messages in the cards as to how they could improve their professional situation. But that’s only half the story. The other half still came back again and again asking when they would marry a man who the cards clearly indicated was commitment phobic and would take time to propose (maybe even years), and others who were only interested in a rough time frame for their answer rather than how they could make things happen for them.

As cocreaters of our lives, I believe some opportunities are truly Heaven sent, but it’s what we do with them that makes us feel on top of the world. Information is power, and when the cards go into depth about why a certain issue may have cropped up again in your life, or how a personality trait of yours may hinder the blossoming of a relationship, it’s time to take notice.

Not for the Tarot’s sake. Or for the amount of time and money you have spent on a reading’s sake. But purely for your sake.

Let’s take an example.

A dynamic corporate manager in her 30’s comes to ask about her job security at a large multinational that’s recently undergone policy and management changes. The cards answer “Yes there’s security BUT you may need to improve your interpersonal skills and be a little proactive” She walks away smiling.

Months later I hear she has lost her job. And the Tarot was to blame.

For a few minutes I felt awful, even responsible in a way for her loss. After all hadn’t I told her job would remain secure if she learnt to get along with people. I listened to her ranting. And remembered Monica’s words from way back when. Tarot is not fortune telling. Focus on the advice and not the outcome.

It seemed pointless to remind her of the Tarot, somewhere perhaps she may have become complacent by the outcome of the cards. She didn’t listen, it was past, I gently told her about the fact and she calmed down remembering that in my introduction I had told her clearly that the future can always change. I don’t know if I took the blow or she did as the message came hurtling down on the telephone.

But somewhere it made me think all over again to the true meaning and purpose of the Tarot. Why blame the cards when they weren’t ever meant to be predictors in the first place? Why not focus on the guidance the cards have to offer instead of focusing only when and just when?

Reading Past Lives With The Tarot

12 Wednesday Dec 2012

Posted by mitabhan in Tarot

For those among us who believe in reincarnation, our past lives hold the key to a number of lessons in this lifetime that we need to learn. It isn’t important whether you were a pauper or a prince, a prisoner or a prima donna, what’s critical is why the image or the memory has returned this lifetime, what common lesson is being carried forward into this life that you may need to take note of. And over the years, I’ve discovered that the Tarot does indeed give a glimpse of those lessons that have been carried across the centuries – but only if your intent is clear and the lesson significant enough to mention.

Recently a young woman came to see me.  Badly hurt by an older man who had not only two timed her but literally robbed her of her life savings, she looked across the table and just asked why. She admitted to feeling rage and spent her time planning her revenge, which deep down she knew wouldn’t really help. The issue she felt was something more.

We turned to the Tarot for answers. And sure enough, it was a past life theme that was recurring in her life. In one lifetime they were business partners and she had betrayed him by murdering him. In another they were warriors on the battleground and in another they were father and son, where she as the son let her father down when he needed his son the most. Every lifetime carried painful memories, and the card of heartbreak kept repeating itself over spread after spread.

Now that we had managed to uncover when and in what form this man had appeared in earlier lifetimes, we then tried to find out the most important thing. Why was he back. Why was she hurt again. And what did she need to learn? And strangely she pulled out the card of forgiveness. Somewhere he had returned in this lifetime to teach her this difficult yet critical lesson. And seemed to point that she would find peace after forgiving him and rising above the recent events, and her soul would evolve to greater things when she learnt how to forgive herself.. A tough lesson indeed and one in which I learnt from as well as the interpreter of her cards.

We discussed the concept of forgiveness for a while, and what was beautiful was her willingness to understand the importance of it in our lives. The longer we hold on to our resentment and rage, the more painful it becomes for us. The more we realize that some heartaches owe their roots to hundreds of years ago, the sooner we realize that in the big picture this lifetime is simply a promotion in the school of life and if we want to graduate or move on to the next class or grade we need to past some tests. Easy to theorize about but tough to implement, lessons like forgiveness are things we all know about, but sometimes just shrug off, finding it too simplistic. But it’s the simplest things that are the hardest to learn.

Somewhere in the session, the cards had unlocked issues she needed to address and now it was up to her. The cards could only point in a certain direction, the rest was up to her. She walked away a little relieved and returned the next week with her friend who wanted to know about a past life connection to some man she had met, just for fun. And just that day, her cards decided to have a bit of fun themselves. As she pulled out her cards from the deck, they remained totally silent about her past life. I shrugged my shoulders and smiled and read her Significator card as her message. “Enjoy the present moment” it said.

Good Card. Bad Card.

12 Wednesday Dec 2012

Good Card-Bad Card

“Oh No, that’s a bad card” she exclaimed when she saw the Death card in the spread in front of her. And before she could react any further I clarified that the card had nothing to do with physical death, which isn’t for a merely mortal reader to see in the first place. It had to do with endings and beginnings, which isn’t necessarily bad, at all. For example, the Death card appeared as possible outcome to her current job which wasn’t giving her much satisfaction or returns. And would signify, a time for positive change. By saying goodbye to her present situation and by opening her mind to new possibilities, even in new industries, the Death card would usher for her, a brand new chapter in her career.

The Tarot cards are here to encourage, give hope, identify options for future behaviour and give us that inward glimpse of our own soul. No where is it written or said that they are good or bad. At the end of the day there are no bad cards, only bad interpretations.

Take for example the Devil card which could mean obsessiveness, control, greed domination, addiction, lust, darker sides of human nature yes, but nothing to do in the literal sense. If this card appears in a reading it may be describing a side of your personality, for example are you asking the same question again and again to the reader or a situation where you may need to learn that the harder we hold on something, the more we need to learn the art of letting go. I have heard of a case where a middle aged man was told that the Devil card was a ghostly spirit in his house and it would require intricate and expensive poojas and rituals to remove it. Clearly a misinterpretation motivated by someone’s greed.

If you see a lot of Swords in the spread ahead of you, you’re not getting stabbed all over the place, it only signifies a lot of energy in the mental plane. Maybe you’ve been thinking too much or worrying needlessly.

The Tower with its grim picture of people falling out of windows and rooftops speaks to us of the unexpectedness of Life. At the end of the day, nothing is in our hands is it? No reading will reveal every single thing that will happen. No person will be ever be able to tell you everything in advance. The majority of the knowledge truly does lie out there in Universe. And Tower cards which could signify shocks and surprises is just the way Life operates when we need to learn certain life lessons. If the Tower appears in a relationship reading it may signify a shock, and a time to learn about people, love, relationships, trust.. It may appear painful or tough at first, but in the long run it will make us stronger and wiser.

At the end of the day the cards serve only as a guide, and another way of making sense of the world around us. If we look at our Lives and label everything as “good”, “bad” then we allow life to treat us in that manner, giving us those kind of experiences. But if we look at life as just is, and the cards as just what they mean, we discover that every challenging experience has something valuable in it to learn from.

Remember to always trust your own feeling about a reading. Don’t judge one card and think its all downhill from here. Look at the spread in totality, try and understand the deeper meaning and the overall message of the Tarot cards. And realize, every message is for highest good, even the tough ones.

Tarot – A Personal Overview

12 Wednesday Dec 2012

Empress card

Like all love affairs that get better with age, I fell in love with the Tarot cards way back in the 70’s when as a 9 year old I peeked over the shoulder of an Australian houseguest who introduced the cards to me in a gentle and educative manner. I knew those beautifully designed cards were so much more than pretty pictures and I was determined to unravel their mysteries.

The feelings grew. And today, 3 decades later, I continue to feel passionate about my deck of Tarot Cards and the whole philosophy behind their creation. To me they aren’t just a set of pictures with bullet point meanings; they are a glimpse into the mysteries of Life. Tarot cards help me harness my clairvoyant, healing and empathic abilities and allow me to heal others by bringing clarity into their lives.

One of the things I appreciate the most about the Tarot is that it is always a unique experience. Each person who comes to me is unique, facing a unique set of challenges and the cards somehow reach out and make that special meaningful connection. They have a way of expressing the past, present and future in the most memorable ways. And not only do they bring bring clarity, Tarot readings also empower, inform, guide and offer solutions to whoever seeks answers

Tips for a Good Tarot Reading

  1. Think Your Question Through
In order to get the most out of a Tarot reading, it helps to think about your question before hand. Take a few seconds to pause and think what exactly would you like to know? And rather than limit your self to a Yes/No Answer, e.g. “Does she love me?”, why not ask “What do I need to know about my love for X?” And then you’re privy to a whole lot of other information, like what is happening in your relationship, what she feels for you, what you feel for her and where you may be heading in the future.
  2. Avoid rolling too many questions in one
The Tarot does best when it answers one issue at a time. Avoid asking about your job promotion, your marriage and your past life in one question. Not only does it exhaust the reader, it also sometimes leads to unclear answers. Focused questions lead to focused answers.
  3. Accept Responsibility for your life
The Tarot believes we can shape our future and provides helpful insights into your present moment and what direction your life can go if you follow a particular advice etc.

Ultimately we as human beings are responsible for our own lives, and the Tarot is simply a tool that gives us empowering knowledge. The more informed we are about our present moment, the better decisions we can make about our tomorrow.

Avoid asking questions that deflect responsibility like “Will I get promoted?” Instead you can turn it around to “What do I need to know if I want to be promoted in 6 months?” In that way you are gaining from the wisdom of the Tarot and enabling yourself to work towards a more positive direction.

The Tarot can lay forth your options, challenges, strengths, weaknesses, hidden influences and possible outcomes. Ultimately the decision lies in your hands, and no reading is 100% accurate or carved in stone.

  4. Examples of Good Questions to ask the Tarot:
    • “What do I need to know if I want to find a satisfying job in the next 6 months?”
    • “How can I improve my relationship with my mother/brother/girlfriend etc?”
    • “Where am I on my Life Path?”
    • “Why do I feel connected to this girl, did we share a past life?”
    • “Does my fear of failure have its roots in a past life?”

What You Can Expect from a Reading With Me

An insightful in depth look into your situation delivered in an empowering and positive manner. My readings aim to bring you clarity and hope and are a combination of clairvoyant abilities, knowledge of the Tarot cards, Reiki healing abilities and my knowledge of Crystals, Colours, Aromatherapy and Feng Shui. Ultimately, my role is simply to provide you with as much of information you need to walk away feeling clearer, stronger, lighter and more in tune with your path and purpose.

Tarot Code of Ethics

Code Of Ethics

(World Tarot Network – USA.)

  • I respect a client’s right to confidentiality
  • I will interpret and read the cards honestly and to the best of my abilities
  • I will share with a client all possibilities and offer any suggestions I feel will help a client focus clearly and intently. A tarot reading is not a substitute for medical diagnosis, legal counsel or stock advice – that is left to those professionals.
  • I will advise the clients of the costs of a reading before the appointment is made. There are no hidden extra charges.
  • I may refuse to read for any client if I feel the reading at all is unethical.
  • Time in the future is in transit – unformed and undecided. The future is not a fixed event. Decisions we make today affect our tomorrows.
  • The Tarot experience is a way of looking at what energies are currently in the life of a client and a possible outcome if certain actions are taken or not taken
  • Tarot cards are neither good or bad, they can be used to encourage, give hope, identify options for future behaviour
  • I believe we control our destiny and are responsible for our own decisions. The Tarot provides insights based on current circumstances and as those conditions change, so does the outcome.
  • I believe all people must act according to their own beliefs and to search their own consciousness for the answers from within.
  • I serve only as a guide or tool for my clients.

Tarot FAQS

F.A.Q & Tips

The Right Question Brings the Right Answers. A Tarot Reader Answers Your Queries.

One important principle of the Tarot is that the answer depends very much on the question – you will always get a true response, but the more you take responsibility for your question, the more direct and useful the answer will be.

Here are some time tested tips which have been culled from the experts and handed down generations that will help you get the most of your money’s worth from the Tarot cards..

  1. Think Your Question Through. Note It Down
Take time out and carefully think through your issue before you go in for a Tarot reading. Not only will it save you and the reader’s time, but if you’re paying for a session, it will save you money as well. Carry along a notepad with your questions and jot down the insights.
  2. Be Clear and Direct.
Questions should be straightforward and clearly defined. A brief background to your concern will help the reader focus better and offer you insights on your specific situation. Vague questions lead to vague answers. If you want a general overview, state it. Remember the Tarot Reader will give you the most honest insights to your situation so the more honest you are with yourself and your reader, the more beneficial the insights will be.
  3. Avoid Bunching Too Many Questions in One.
I’ve had countless people coming in and ask me to tell them about why their relationship is going through a bad patch, why they are not getting a promotion and if so, how much can they expect? Not only do such questions exhaust the reader, they confuse the issue and the clarity disappears. Slow down, relax, one issue at a time.

Ultimately the decision lies in your hands, and no reading is ever carved in stone.

  5. Avoid Yes/No Questions
Frame a question in such a way that you get more out of a reading. Instead of asking “Will I be happy in marriage?” ask “How can I work towards a happy marriage with my spouse?” In that way, you not only receive guidance, an honest assessment of your situation, you become an active and not passive participant in your own Life. Remember happiness resides in all of us. Sometimes it helps to have a little information to help us find it within.
  6. Open Mind
As Tarot readers have been saying for centuries, a good tarot reading occurs when you believe and come with an open mind. Without belief, the whole operation is an exercise in futility. You should also be willing to at least consider the advice given to you by the reader, and not dismiss it off hand. Tarot only works for those who are willing to listen.

To quote a famous reader “They do not always tell you what you want to know, but they do always tell what you need to know. They do not always answer the question that you ask, but they will always answer the question that needs answering the most.”

  7. Treat the Tarot as if it were a friend
A Tarot reading can sometimes be like a visit to a friend who can look at your situation objectively and empathically. Remember a Tarot reader is simply interpreting your cards in context of your question and trying to help you find clarity and focus in your life at that point in time.
  8. Don’t expect Fortune Telling
Tarot cards, in the hands of an experienced Tarot reader, can tell you things about your past, about your present, and often, things that may happen in the future. But Tarot card reading is not fortune-telling. Any possible outcomes the reader sees are possibilities only. Your future depends on your past and current actions, and you can change your outcome by changing your actions.

To quote Marion Weinstein “What is the future, anyway?  It is a state of being that exists in the present – as potential.  It is an accumulation of trends, based firmly on the past and present.  The future is a choice, or more specifically, a series of choices, just as all of life can be viewed as a large group of choices.”

Examples of Good Questions to ask the Tarot

  • What do I need to know about my professional life right now if I want a promotion by the year end?
  • How can I improve my relationship with my mother/brother/girlfriend etc?
  • Why am I facing recurring troubles with my business?
  • What is holding me back from achieving my financial goals?
  • What is the best way to handle this situation?
  • I have been struggling to find a job that suits me but have not been successful, what aspect of myself am I not seeing?
  • Where do I stand on my Life path?

Remember, the more focused your question, the more focused will be your insights. Rely on your better judgment and spend a few minutes carefully thinking your situation through. The Tarot reader will help rephrase your question but first you will need to be clear about what exactly you want him/her to reveal to you with the Tarot cards.

Tarot- Road Map of Your Life

3 of pentacles from the Pink Aquarian Tarot

Today the Tarot is no longer a mysterious word. Everyone has heard of it, seen it somewhere or knows someone who’s either reading or has been read.  At their simplest level, these beautifully illustrated deck of 78 cards represent all the possible cycles of life and experiences that one might encounter.  The visuals contain symbolism that is deeply imprinted on our subconscious and collective mind, and through these symbols draw out what is buried in our own minds and souls and bring it to light, where we can examine them and learn to apply these universal concepts to our own life.

Deriving its name from the Italian word “torres” meaning the flow of the river, a tarot reading is like a snapshot of life’s energies, ebbing and flowing within all of us. Sometimes we are upbeat and our energies are radiant and pulsating, sometimes we are confused and energies appear scattered and when down, our auras appear dense and clogged. Somehow the cards pick up on our energies and mirror them back to us.

Unlike astrology which is based on the position of planets we were born, or palmistry which is based on the lines in our hands, Tarot is based on present moment energies. What is going on in your mind, heart and soul, right now as you read the cards. The past provides answers to our conditions, learnings to our mistakes and experiences that have shaped us. The future is simply a possibility, a mystery a blur of words and visuals. It is the right now that contains all the power, and the Tarot taps into that power effectively.

Traditionalist Tarot readers tell us that the Tarot is not fortune telling. It is not about tomorrow, when. It’s a snapshot of life, right now, and any possible outcomes the reader sees are possibilities only. Your future depends on your past and current actions, and you can change your outcome by changing your actions.

A good time to visit a Tarot reader is when you have a decision to make and want information about your choices. Or when you need some direction about your career, or when you want to improve a troublesome relationship. The Tarot tells you how to help yourself, why something may be happening and what may happen IF you apply its wisdom. I’ve had people asking about why they’re not getting the job that was predicted for them when they haven’t even updated their resume or contacted placement agents! The Tarot can only point to a particular direction, the will to change and the effort belongs to the individual alone to fulfil their truest potential.

People ask me if they can change the outcome of their reading and the answer is absolutely. Your future is not predetermined, and you have free will, along with the right and responsibility to exercise it.  A tarot reading should never be accepted as an absolute prediction of things to come, but rather an encouragement if you are on the right path, or a warning of what may come if you continue down a destructive path.  Tarot readings should be considered tools for making positive changes in your own life and for understanding the influences at work in any situation.  We all have the ultimate responsibility for using this information and making our own decisions

The Tarot believes we as human beings have the right of Free Will. The right to choose our own attitude. The right to ignore a reading. The right to change the way we look at things right now. A reading may reveal 2 people in love at that present moment with a possibility of marriage, but if any one partner chooses to exert his Free Will and cheat or walk away, the outcome does change.

And finally what can these cards do and not do for us?

The cards give you a picture of unseen influences, patterns of behavior, obstacles, and strengths. A reading can show you where you are now, where you’ve come from, where you want to be, and how to get there. Since the future is not a fixed event, it can reveal a possible outcome if you apply the wisdom of in the spread of cards.

On the other hand, a Tarot reading or reader for that matter, cannot run your life or take every decision for you, ultimately we are all the masters of our own destinies. Traditionally not a predictor, the Tarot cannot give exact times and dates but can reveal a broad time frame for example, within 3 months.

The secret to a good reading lies not in the deck but the question you ask and the reader’s knowledge of the cards and intuitive abilities to interpret the cards and answer. There are no right answers in the Tarot, a good reading just feels right in our hearts and souls.
