Derived from the Latin word “compati” meaning to ‘suffer with’, compassion is the moment when we step out of our own struggle and feel what the other person is going through. And it extends way beyond empathy and care, it lies in the doing – be it in the form of prayer, acts of kindness, charity or simply listening to another.
“It’s the capacity to understand that every war is both won and lost. And that someone else’s pain is as meaningful as your own.” – Barbara Kingsolver
Today’s card comes as a realisation that it’s not always always about me or you and the lives we lead and the challenges we face. It’s about going beyond ourselves – to the family in the floor below us grieving the loss of their mother, the old man on the wheel chair with a brain injury who can’t help himself from getting angry at his caregivers, the widow surrounded by a mountain of bills, documents and receipts after her husband’s passing, the exhaustion on the face of a young student fleeing a war, the worry of the father who’s just been retrenched. And if it’s not possible to extend a hand the least we can do is pray for a little peace in their hearts. And for this world.
