8 of Swords. Don’t feed the fear

8 of swords from the Goddess Tarot deck

“I’m so scared. What if I ask my boss for a promotion and he refuses me.”

“If I ask her out I’m afraid she’ll say no.”

“What if I fail my exams?”

“Will my father be angry with me if I tell him ?”

“I fear I will never get another job if I quit.”

Who doesn’t have fears. Fears are part and parcel of being human. And whenever the 8 of Swords appears as an answer to a question related to something that’s making you anxious, you can be pretty sure that the fears are not coming true.

A minor card from the suit of swords, this card talks about feeling trapped in our state of fear, of reliving the horror, and being unable to move to a space of freedom and courage. And that’s exactly what the card wants you to do. To not stay stuck, to move, even if it’s one step at a time.

A long time ago a wise old man told me “on the other side of fear is courage, be brave enought to walk through this emotion” At first I couldn’t. The ‘what ifs’ and ‘oh no’s’ swirled through my head like a never ending chorus, but with effort and self exploration I realised the fears that held me back were temporary blocks to getting what I wanted.

Whenever I see the 8 of Swords I always convey the message “Don’t let your fear of what could happen make nothing happen” Walk through the fears with logic and the help of a friend or a counsellor if you must. The fears you feel are false and on the other side could be the liberation you need.

Alternative Therapy. Another Path to Wellness

Alternative healing, whentogoalternative

The ancient YinYang symbol illustrates the state of balance and harmony between dualities, which is also the goal of alternative therapies.

Alternative therapies, also known as complementary medicine refer to a range of health care practices, medicines and systems that are not part of conventional or allopathic medicine. 100% natural these practices have been culled down the centuries by practitioners the world over. And are becoming increasingly popular among people for their range of benefits.

Alternative therapies include herbal supplements, mind, body, soul practices, meditation, chiropractic and acupressure methods and massage. Gentler in application, results are slower but surer with the least amount of side effects.

Alternative therapy can be considered alongside with conventional medicine when:

  1. The side effects of the allopathic medicine are too unbearable.  Alternative therapies are natural with the least amount of side effects. Some forms of healing like Reiki, EFT, Pranic Healing etc can help reduce the side effects of conventional medicine considerably over time.
  • Alternative healing is safe, natural and gentle. Therapists work according to your pace and spend more time with each patient, thoroughly assessing your case before beginning treatments.
  •  Alternative therapy reminds you that you are in charge of your mind, body and soul and shows you the connection in a holistic sense. Your irritability may be related to a physical and an emotional condition. Grief may lead to physical symptoms. And when you understand the correlation you respond better to treatment.
  • Tried and trusted for centuries. Many of the Ayurvedic  and Chinese herbs have been documented for over hundreds of years. Sometimes your grandmother’s herbal home remedy works faster and more surely than a pill.
  • Stress relief. As they say in alternative therapy, a calm mind is a healthy and happy mind. Complementary therapies like acupressure, massage, healing meditations, creative visualization and yoga offer long term solutions to stress relief in the form of greater calm, better sleep, improved interpersonal  relations etc.

Alternative therapy believes in choice and the healing powers of nature. Slow but sure they provide gentler, safer therapy and work very well alongside conventional medicine. As with all healing practices it is best to inform your doctor and your alternative healer of your ailment and your medication.

dont burnout, selfcare tips

All of us have had days where we get simply exhausted by life’s demands. It could be the workplace. The kids. The responsibilities that pile up. And it begins to show in the way we feel, behave or think. Our bodies start giving us signals that we’ve had enough and if we don’t pay attention to the red flags, we could end up ill or in a meltdown. And for those of us who tend to put the needs of others before ourselves, or work ourselves to the point of sheer exhaustion, reaching the breakdown/burnout point is the point where we HAVE to help ourselves. And deep in our hearts we all know very well we should have paid attention to the symptoms earlier.

Common Symptoms

  • Exhaustion
  • Demotivation
  • Negative Thoughts
  • Snapping at people, road rage
  • Frequent memory lapses
  • Making frequent mistakes
  • Interpersonal problems with people at work or with family
  • Binge eating. Drinking. Giving into addictions

Here’s what to do if you’ve reached the absolute breaking point.

  1. Switch off your phone and all electronic devices for a while. Don’t interact with anyone if you’re not upto it. The focus is on getting back to you.
  2. Catch up on your sleep. Poor sleep patterns can lead to burnouts and meltdowns. Make sure you’re getting enough zzzz time. And avoid the pills please, research has shown that in the long run sleeping pills do much more harm than hgood.
  3. Get more organised. Delegate tasks. Find a support system and ask for help.
  4. Go for a massage.
  5. Take short breaks to do ‘nothing” and simply be. Listen to your breath, meidtate go for a walk outdoors, call up a friend.
  6. Meet your doctor if symptoms dont lessen.

Don’t wait for your body to burnout with the stress, taking remedial steps as an sos measure. Self care is the most important inside job we need to do if we want to survive and thrive in today’s world.

Alternative Healing for Hyperactive Kids

Bringing up a hyperactive child can be difficult. Not only is it tiring to handle a child with so much energy, it can also be frustrating to understand their moods. Nothing seems to hold their attention for too long and their emotional outbursts can be draining out for the parent. Alternative healing offers certain remedies to bring about calmness and reduce the feelings of frustration and stress in both the parent and child.

Deep breathing
This is a highly effective technique that immediately calms one down. Teach your child to breathe deeply when they’re beginning to get frustrated and restless. If you find yourself getting irritated, practice deep breathing.

Reiki Healing

Completely natural and safe, reiki healing involves directing pure, positive energy to the ailment be it physical, emotional or mental.  With time reiki healing helps soothe the agitation and restlessness, bringing back the child’s energies into balance.

Massage
Gently rub in lavender infused massage oils into your child’s temples or shoulders. Lavender has a calming effect and helps release the stress. Besides, the bond between the parent and child grows.

Bath salts
Scented bath salts like lavender, jasmine and sandalwood are good cleansers and help remove toxins from the body. A few teaspoons mixed in a tub of water will help a hyperactive child relax considerably.

Natural light
Studies have revealed that children who spend more time indoors or in artificial lighting get bored and restless more than children who play outdoors daily. Ensure your child is getting enough physical exercise outdoors on a daily basis. While playing indoors ensure he or she receives adequate sunlight in the room.

Pastel colors
Bright red, orange and yellow are stimulating colors. Studies indicate too much red in the wardrobe or on the walls and bed linen raise the blood pressure levels and subsequently stress levels and aggression. Pastel colors like sky blue, light green, peach and baby pink soothe the child and work towards bringing the body’s energies back to balance.

Healing crystals
Moonstone, blue lace agate and even rose quartz are the gentle soothers of crystal healing. Moonstone in particular brings a sense of calm and clarity and can reduce impulsiveness which may be destructive.Image

While blue lace agate reduces anger and rose quartz brings in a sense of loving kindness towards oneself and others around.

Hyperactive children don’t need our raised voices. They need our love, understanding and willingness to work for greater peace.

Did you know the sound of water is therapeutic?

Sitting by the ocean listening to the sound of the waves.

Raindrops on your window pane.

The gentle melodies of a waterfall.

The babbling of a stream.

Simply listening for a few minutes helps bring our bodies back to balance and allows us to reconnect with our inner essence. Regardless of how technically advanced the world is becoming we still need to connect with the source of Nature. Listening to the sound of running water has been proven to be an extremely effective way to detach, de-stress and find our own sense of harmony. Our brains respond to the sounds within minutes and if it’s not possible to get to a natural water body, the effect is the same with a recording or by bringing a small water fountain in your office or home.

Science too has proven that the human brain enjoys the power of relaxation brought upon by the sounds of Nature in real time or in a recording. The sounds of flowing water relax the central nervous system and some studies have revealed that people who listen to the sounds of nature especially water, are more productive and focussed than others.

So the next time you’ve had a sensory overload from listening to the sounds of traffic and construction, take out 5 minutes to listen to the sounds of water.

Revisiting the Runes – Othala

06 Wednesday Mar 2019

cyclesoflife, rune meaning othala, understanding pain

Othala is the rune that symbolises the final and eternal beauty of our soul’s resting place. And the wisdom, the gifts and the inheritance of our ancestors. Some books refer to the message of unity. We are all connected by pain in the constant cycle of life.

Today was one of those days.

A young client of mine passed away at the age of 26. Her cousin messaged me with the news and all day I’ve been walking around with a heavy heart.

So many questions, so many feelings. So many learnings. So many prayers.

May her soul rest in peace. May her parents find strength.

Why the men don’t stay

A string of bad relationships and you’re suddenly confused.

“Why cant I find a stable man?” is a question most Tarot readers are asked. And the answer is almost always the same.

Because you’re trying in the wrong direction. Stability doesn’t come from another source. It comes from within us. And when we realise that we have no choice but to be responsible and accountable for our own selves, whether it’s pleasant or not we reach that space of stability and security.

A better question to ask the Tarot is;

“What do I need to learn if I want to attract a long term relationship into my life?”

Learn from your mistakes. Did you feel uncomfortable when he was out of sight? Did you always send many many more messages than you received? Did he get irritated when you asked him too many questions, especially about his friends. Did you stop meeting your friends because he became your priority. Did your plans revolve around his availability.  Did he begin to avoid you when you acted needy? These were just a few of the signs.

Start going inwards. Become your own best friend. Find a space of peace that belongs to you and only you. Don’t expect it to happen in a day. But dont give up on trying either. Sooner or later you will begin to radiate a sense of self assuredness and stability that will not only draw the right men to you, it will show you that before we love another we have to love ourselves.
