Uncle was in his 80s when he came to India and spent a few days with us before he went to visit his village in Punjab. Not only was it a pleasure to have his calm and cheerful presence at home it was such a learning.
He lived in a state of constant gratitude and made it a point to thank everyone he encountered personally. The helper who brought his chai. The driver who carried his bags. The helper who mopped our floors. My husband for figuring out his tickets. And as a result all of us beamed in his light and his words. None of us expected it as this was Uncle after all, a familiar and loving presence from my childhood. But just hearing his words made us all feel happier and honoured to help him, in any way we all could.
And from him I learnt to be more grateful. Not silently in my head. But to say it out loud to whoever and whatever made our days more liveable.
Uncle passed on many years ago. And in my last interaction with him at his home I remember him thanking me for coming to visit him. It is him I thank for showing me the importance of thanking people personally. Wherever you are dear Uncle Tan Sri GS Gill, may you remain blessed and thank you
